Men’s Involvement in Maternal Health Care: Implications for Pregnancy Outcomes in Lagos State, Nigeria

This study examines men’s role in maternal health care and the implications of this for pregnancy outcomes in Lagos State, Nigeria. Men’s role during delivery influence pregnancy outcomes, assessment of men’s involvement in ante-natal care influence safe delivery and examination of men’s assistance in domestic chores reduce birth complications. Quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were used. In the quantitative study two questionnaires used, male and female questionnaires. Bivariate and Multivariate analyses was carried out to analyze data. Logistic regression and cross-tabulation using chi-square method were used to determine the relationship between the dependent and independent variables in the study. Men's involvement in ANC is still very low, majority of men in the study area do not accompany their wives for ANC, and many do not assist them in domestic chores and other vital areas. There is need for greater involvement of men in maternal health especially pregnancy care in the State.
