The Impact of Revising the International Migration Components on the 2010 Demographic Analysis Sex Ratios

In 2010, the Population Division of the U.S. Census Bureau released a series of Demographic Analysis (DA) estimates by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin that were later compared to 2010 Census counts. The DA estimates were produced using historical vital statistics records, estimates of international migration, and information from the Medicare database. When Census Bureau researchers evaluated the 2010 DA estimates by age and sex, a pattern emerged that was not present in prior decades of demographic analysis estimates. Further research and analysis led to the production and release of an alternative 2010 DA series that contained several updates including the incorporation of information from Mexico's 2010 Census into the estimate of international migration. This poster describes the methods used in the revised international migration series and discusses the impact of the revision on the 2010 DA resident population estimates by age, sex, and race.
