More or Less Care in Multigenerational Households? An Empirical Analysis of Time Use in Cambodia

Savet Hong, University of California, Berkeley

The literature on grandparents suggests the important role of coresiding grandmothers in providing care to children, while the literature on time use focuses on maternal time for childcare within a nuclear family context. Bridging these literatures, this study examines time spent on childcare between nuclear and multigenerational households. This paper uses Cambodia’s first nationally collected time use data, the Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey (CSES). The analysis shows differences in time allocated to care giving between types of households. The results will be discussed in the context of Cambodian family structure and behavioral norms.
