An Exploratory Analysis of the Determinants of Hukou Intermarriage in Urban China

This paper explores the individual level determinants of Hukou intermarriage between different Hukou groups in urban China. Using data from the 2008 Chinese General Social Survey, I apply multinomial logit model to examine the effect of educational attainment, Chinese Communist party membership, parental education and parental CCP membership on the likelihood of intermarry with people from different Hukou status group by gender. Intermarriages between rural and urban Hukou holders,between rural Hukou holders and converters, and between urban Hukou holders and converters are examined. The preliminary results reveal that highly educated rural Hukou males and females are more likely to marry urban Hukou holders or converters. Parental education and political credentials do not significantly influence the likelihood of intermarriage for both males and females.
